An Index to Serial Number Lists. The following is presented to assist in locating serial number lists and/or other information useful in dating Brass Instruments. Serial numbers can be found in a variety of places on different instruments. Please use the images below to help locate the serial number on your instrument. Tubas and baritone horns most often have the serial number on the center valve or on the mouthpiece receiver. Brass Serial Numbers. The S prefix, while used until the mid-80s, was not always seen on serial numbers.

The development of a serial number list has been very difficult because of the lack of official records. Mr. H. N. White kept very detailed records but when the company was sold to the Seeburg Corporation all official records were destroyed. When looking up the age of your instrument, complete the following steps: (1.) Find your instruments catalog page and year that the catalog was made. Pay special attention to the small details on your instrument because most artists drawings account for unique changes and features. (2.) Compare your findings to the serial number list. Please keep in mind that most catalogs were dated on the back and should be trusted more than the serial number list.

  • Early instruments will have a 'lion head' by the serial numbers and are engraved 'The King'.
  • In 1918 the company was incorporated and 'Co' was added to the engraving of all instruments, before 1918 the engraving read simply as 'H. N. White.'
  • In 1926-1928 H. N. White introduced Sterling Silver bells to his instruments.
  • In 1948-1950 'Silver Tone' engraving was changed to read 'Silversonic'.
  • After 1966, all instruments were manufactured in Eastlake and engraved with 'King Musical Instruments.'

1/01/2008 We have reevaluated the serial number list to reflect new information. The number of instruments produced in the early years 1893-1905, has been reduced.

The serial number lists are NOT 100% accurate.

I own a Hirsbrunner HBS-193 Bb Kaiser tuba, and I'll be doggoned if I can find the serial number. I've pored over that valve body with a flashlight, from every angle. There is a '17' stamped on each of the four casings casing, but that's all.

The lore is that they are on the second valve casing, as they are on piston tubas, but I see nada.
I also read that they are under the model number, but I don't see one of those, either, and I suspect those were placed at the request of the traditional US importer, through whom I don't believe my instrument passed.
Any ideas?

Second question: the lore, which I just researched to answer the above question, sparked by the thread from a day or two ago, also says that the first two or three digits define the year the instrument (or at least the valve body) was made. Was this an old B&M/Nirschl tradition?--I know they supplied piston valves to Hirsbrunner up through the middle 90's. If so, might it apply to my B&M-made York Master? That serial number starts with 66, and 1966 would be completely plausible. Enquiring minds want to know.
